A day in Krakow

Today we headed out for a day in Krakow. The weather forcast was for rain, so umbrellas were to be kept on hand.dsc00143 As it turned out, we never did get any rain. The weather actually was quite warm and humid. I was told that if this continues for too much longer, I would be asked to take back the weather I brought from New Hampshire.

Finding parking was very interesting. The "Tour de Pologna" was going on today and roads wer closed off for the Race Course. We eventually did find a place to put the car, but did end up having to move it to another location because at some point in time, nobody would be allowed to come in or out of the area after the race actually started.

Before we left to go to Krakow we picked up Lukasz's girlfriend to join us for the day. After we parked the car it was a nice relaxing walk to the Rynek.

dsc00158"Rynek" is the marketplace. Almost every city and town in Poland has a Rynek in one form or another... some are bigger and some are smaller. The Rynek in Krakow is very large and holds some interesting buildings. What you see pictured here is "Sukiennice" or "Cloth Hall" This was a place of trading in Poland's history. Today it still is a place of trading... trading money for souveniers. Short History here.

Another icon of the Rynek in Krakow is Kościół Mariacki or St. Mary's Basilica. I can't post all my photos in this blog, so take some time to view the photos I have posted in my photo gallery.

We met up with another relative later and had some ice cream. It was wonderful to see Gosia and Adam again. It was a long time since we last met. We would spend the rest of the day with Gosia and Adam.

dsc00206 Despite having a very large and tasty ice cream treat earlier we had the need for some real food, so Gosia knew a place that made some wonderful "Zapiekanki". The best way to describe zapienkanki is a half slice of a sub roll that has whatever you want on it that is then baked like pizza. In my case I had the ham with everything. Ham, Cheese, Pickles, Chives, & sauce.

After lunch we went to another of my favorite places to see in Krakow.... Wawel Castle. Wawel Castle is situated along the Wisła River up on a hill.  Wisła is pronounced Veeswa.

After walking around Wawel Castle we went back to Rynek and Stare Miasto (Old Town). Rynek and Stare Miasto was packed with people, not only because of tourists, but also because of the "Tour de Pologna". Part of the route of this bicycle race went right through the marketplace.

For the evening we went to the home of Gosia. We had a wonderful time chatting and eating some Pirogi! :) Of course this was all washed down with ... what else..... but a few more beers.
